“Brigadistas griegos” is a research project that brings together colleagues from different countries (Spain, Greece, UK…) and disciplines (history, archaeology, literature…) to delve into the relationship between Greeks and the Spanish Civil War, as well as its impact.
Since 2025, our project aims at recovering the memories and materialities of Greek volunteers in the Spanish Civil War, bringing to light their impact in the diffusion of antifascist values and hope across borders. To do so, we are collecting archival data, oral memories and materialities, both from their families and the archaeological record, as well as references in popular culture.
Around 400 Greek volunteers participated in the Spanish Civil War
Many sidestepped Metaxas’ dictatorship’s prohibition and went to Spain
Others went from the diaspora in France, England or the USA
Many were killed during the war
Those who survived participated in Resistance movements in Greece and elsewhere keeping up the antifascist struggle for decades
This had a strong influence in Greek literature and the arts
